Aryeh Neier was born on April 22, 1937, in Berlin, Germany. Neier worked for the American Civil Liberties Unionfor fifteen years and served as the executive director of the ACLU from 1970 to 1978.  Neier later taught law at New York University, Georgetown University Law School and the University of Siena.  He served as the executive director of Human Rights Watch for twelve years and as president of the Open Society Foundations for almost a decade.
