A Sayreville, NJ, native, Mr. James attended Rutgers University in the early and mid-1960s, earning a bachelor's in geology in 1965 and a master's in geology in 1967.  He served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot with the Americal Division's DIV ARTY AIR, based in Chu Lai, during the Vietnam War.  He spent his career in the field of petroleum geology, working for Exxon, Southland Royalty Company, Meridian Oil and his own consulting firm.
