Louis Russomano was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1925, living in the area during his youth.  In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a gunner's mate on the USS Corry.  During the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, the Corry was sunk by the Germans, and he had to abandon ship.  Under heavy enemy fire, Russomano and other survivors were taken in by other American warships.  After returning to the United States, Russomano served aboard LST 1054 in preparation for the invasion of the Japan, and eventually served 6 months occupational duty there.  After his discharge, Russomano trained as a plumber and went into the plumbing business.
