Michael Perlin was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey in 1946.  He attended Rutgers University and graduated in 1966 with a degree in political science.  At Rutgers, Perlin was the editor in chief of the Targum and covered the antiwar movement at Rutgers including the Genovese teach-in.  Perlin was also a member of the Cap and Skull Honor Society and a Henry Rutgers Scholar.  He then attended law school at Columbia University and graduated in 1969.  Perlin later attended Rutgers School of Social Work, graduated in 1977 and became a private practice psychotherapist.
