Description:

The interview captures the multifaceted life of Sarajane Giere, highlighting her childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, her family background, and her education at Coe College in Iowa, where she met her husband, Bernard "Bernie" Giere.  Bernie’s Air Force career profoundly shaped their lives, and Sarajane reflects on her role as a military spouse, managing responsibilities, and engaging in charity work with the American Heart Association.

The narrative delves into Bernie’s Vietnam deployment, the emotional strains of separation, and the fear following news that his aircraft was shot down, later replaced by immense relief when he returned safely. Post-service life included Bernie’s career as a Pan Am pilot and their adjustment during his furloughs, leading to his involvement with the New York Air National Guard. Sarajane also recounts her return to education, earning a master’s degree and pursuing teaching.

Later years were marked by challenges, including Bernie’s battle with ALS, which Sarajane discusses candidly, reflecting on the family’s unity during his illness. After his passing, she began a new chapter, relocating to New Jersey and dedicating herself to preserving her family’s legacy through writing memoirs.
