Description:

Rosemary Agrista, born in 1953 at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey, grew up in South Plainfield in a close-knit, working-class, Italian American community near the former Camp Kilmer military installation.  Raised among extended family members of Italian and Polish heritage, she experienced a culture centered on family gatherings, Catholic traditions and neighborhood cohesion.  Her father worked as a tool-and-die maker and rose to plant supervisor at a Mattel-affiliated facility in South Plainfield. Her mother worked in a pocketbook factory.

Agrista attended overcrowded South Plainfield schools during a period of rapid suburban growth, graduating high school in 1971.  She witnessed the nearby 1967 Plainfield riots and became involved in youth activism, participating in anti-Vietnam War protests and sit-ins in Plainfield and surrounding areas.  Initially enrolling at Union County College in Plainfield and Cranford, she later transferred to Rutgers University's Livingston College, an experimental, urban-focused campus in Piscataway.

At Livingston, Agrista majored in Urban Communications and Journalism, studying under faculty such as Jerry Aumente and taking interdisciplinary courses in Urban Studies with scholars like Michael Greenberg.  She trained in hands-on television and media production and interned at WOR-TV in New York City.  Simultaneously, she pursued creative interests in music, dance, and performance, singing in Rutgers' University Choir.

After graduating in 1976 during an economic recession, Agrista encountered limited opportunities in broadcast media and instead built a multifaceted career.  She directed one of New Jersey's first after-school childcare programs in Finderne, worked with multi-handicapped children in Montclair, and later held administrative roles at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, supporting telecommunications infrastructure operations.

Agrista also founded and operated a dance school (1980–1999) and became deeply involved in tai chi instruction after exposure to the discipline at Livingston.  She later served as office manager at The Natural Path in Watchung, New Jersey, specializing in holistic health services. An active member of the Livingston College Alumni Association board, she remains committed to preserving the legacy of the college while engaging in local environmental advocacy and community planning in Meyersville, New Jersey.
