Interview Summary:

Mercedes Martínez is a transgender woman from Chiapas, Mexico. This interview relates her experiences contracting and surviving Covid-19. She describes the trauma inflicted by Covid-19 through forced isolation and horrible symptoms, including hallucinations. She discusses how the pandemic also left her out of work for three months, which had a devastating impact on her economic wellbeing. She describes the undocumented community in New Brunswick who work in the industrial sector in factories that produce cosmetics and chocolates. Martínez also discusses the trans Latinx community in New Brunswick, which supports itself through forms of mutual aid.
